Botswana is located in southern Africa. It shares a border with Namibia to the west, Zimbabwe to the east and South Africa to the south. It has a total area of about 582 000 square kilometers and the borderline of about 4, 011 kilometres.
Botswana has a multi-party democratic system of government. There are three independent branches of government being the executive, legislature and judiciary. Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama is the President of Botswana. He became president on 1 April 2008. He is the fourth president of Botswana. Sir Seretse Khama, who ruled from 1966 until his untimely death in 1980, was the first president, followed by Sir Ketumile Masire (1980-1998) and Mr. Festus Mogae (1998-2008).
Botswana has been a stable constitutional democracy since independence from Britain in 1966. So far it has held nine successive legislative elections beginning 1965.
