NATIONAL IDENTITY (OMANG)
Overview

It is a document that is used to show that one is a citizen of the Republic of Botswana. It is requirement by law that every Motswana above the age of 16 have one. This card is also commonly known as Omang and is valid for 10 years, after which it must be renewed. Omang forms are issued during the application process because these are security documents.

Requirements for First-time Omang Applicants

  • The applicant must be at least 16 years old.
  • The applicant must come in person to the embassy.
  • Birth certificate
  • One copy of each parents’ identity document (If one or both parents are Batswana, copies of their Omang are required. If one of the parents is a foreigner, a copy of their passport is required.)
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs

Requirements for Renewing Omang

  • Expired Omang card (to be surrendered to the embassy officer)
  • The applicant must come in person to the embassy.
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs
  • Proof of change of surname for applications due to change of surname
  • A fee of BWP5.00 (CHF0.35) is payable for renewals, change of surname, and damaged Identity

Requirements for Replacing Lost Omang

  • An affidavit attesting to the lost Omang
  • The applicant must come in person to the embassy.
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs
  • A fee of BWP110.00 (CHF7.70) is payable for lost and stolen Identity Card.

 

E-PASSPORT

Overview

All Botswana citizens are required to have Botswana passport to travel abroad.

E-Passport Requirements for 16 years and Above

  • Valid Omang
  • Passport application to be completed at the embassy (note that the applicant should have their parents’ identity details such as Omang number, date of birth, place of birth, and residential address)
  • 2 full-coloured passport photos
  • Previously held passport
  • BWP260.00 (CHF18.20) 

E-Passport Requirements for Minors (below age 16)

  • The passport application must be completed in person at the embassy by a parent/guardian on behalf of the minor, who should also be present (note that applications should be able to provide identity details for both parents’ such as Omang number, date of birth, and current residence address)
  • Birth certificate of the minor
  • Parent’s valid Omang
  • Proof of citizenship if parent/s were once foreign nationals (naturalization/registration certificate)
  • 2 full-colour passport photos
  • Previously held passport
  • BWP100.00 (CHF7.00) in cash

For children with dual citizenship, passport validity is restricted to when the child turns 21 years of age (for renunciation purposes).

Requirements for Renewing E-passport

  • Valid Omang
  • Passport application to be completed at the embassy (note that the applicant should have their parents’ identity details such as Omang number, date of birth, place of birth, and residential address)
  • 2 full-colored passport photos
  • Previously held passport
  • BWP260.00 (CHF 18.20) in cash

Requirements for Lost E-Passport

  • Valid Omang
  • Police report
  • Passport application available at the embassy (note that the applicant should have their parents’ identity details such as Omang number, date of birth, and current residence address)
  • 2 full-colour passport photos
  • BWP1260.00 (CHF 88.20) in cash

 

EMERGENCY TRAVEL DOCUMENT

Requirements for Emergency Travel Document (ETD) Application for 16yrs and above

  • Please email botgen@botswanamission.ch, attention Michael Koorapetse to request for the application form.
  • Cover letter (explaining the need for ETD)
  • Application form (Fingerprints should be captured on the application form)
  • 2 full-colour passport photos
  • Certified copy of ID (Omang/Passport)
  • If the passport is lost, Police report is required
  • Travel schedule/ copy of the itinerary
  • Proof of citizenship if parent/s were once foreign nationals (naturalization/registration certificate)
  • BWP12.00(CHF0.80)

BOTSWANA BLUE CARD

Overview

The Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs informs the public that the Government has introduced the Botswana Blue Card (BBC). The Botswana Blue Card allows persons who have renounced Botswana citizenship to retain the right to unlimited stay in Botswana.

Botswana Blue Cardholders have the right to visit, live and work in Botswana. However, they are not entitled to Omang and Botswana Passport.

General requirements for application

  • Completed application form for the Botswana Blue Card
  • Certified copy of a valid Passport
  • Certified Copy of Renunciation Certificate (Botswana Citizenship)
  • 2 coloured passport size photographs
  • Certified copy of acquired citizenship
  • A Non-refundable fee of P 3 000.00 (CHF 210.00) upon submission of the application
  • Only persons who were citizens of Botswana by birth or descent prior to the renunciation of Botswana citizenship qualify to apply for the Botswana Blue Card.
  • A foreign spouse of the Botswana Blue Cardholder does not qualify for the Botswana Blue Card unless they were also citizens of Botswana by birth or descent.
  • Children born after the Botswana Blue Cardholder has renounced Botswana citizenship do not qualify for the Botswana Blue Card

All Botswana Nationals residing in the area of coverage (Switzerland, Austria, Greece and Turkey) are advised to register in the form provided in the homepage of this website.
